The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test of English Language proficiency of non-native English speakers. The test scores are a pre-requisite for getting admission in nations where English is predominantly used for communication. This test is an important step forward for those seeking to study or work in a foreign country.
IELTS has two types of modules - Academic and General Training. Academic Module is required to be given by students who plan to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels. While, General Training Module is generally a prerequisite for the people who either want to pursue vocational studies or plan to immigrate.
The candidate will listen to 4 recordings of total 30 minutes in English spoken by the native people, after which he/she has to answer a set questions based on the audio clippings within 10 minutes. This aims mainly at testing the understandability regarding the attitude of the speakers.

There is no pass or fail system in IELTS test. Candidates are judged on a band scale of 1 to 9 in each part of the test. These bands clearly demarcates a candidate's ability to use and understand English. IELTS results are valid only for two years.
